Monocular used by O’Neill and Mitchell throughout SG1. This small monocular can be worn around the neck inside of the jacket for easy access. We see O’Neill using this throughout the series. After Colonel Mitchell assumes command of SG1 he too carries the monocular in his gear.
Optics are a staple of military units. From binoculars to rifle scopes. Being able to extend human vision over greater distances offers a clear tactical advantage. Stargate SG1 was no different, and we regularly saw the members of SG1 use various optical devices. A favorite of Colonel O’Neill (and Colonel Mitchell) was a small monocular worn around the neck on a paracord.
O’Neill would typically use this scope when he needed to quickly and quietly get a closer look at the enemy to assess a tactical situation. For example, in S520 The Sentinel he can be seen using it. This was a regular part of O’Neill’s offworld kit, and aided him greatly.
We identified the correct scope as the MINOX MD 8×16 or 6×16. This is a commercially available product which you could purchase at the time when SG1 was being filmed. They are still available on some websites and cost between $100-$150. To make it screen accurate, it’s necessary to paint it OD green, similar to the rest of the SG1 uniform such as Jack’s cap.
To make your cosplay complete, SG1Props took an original MINOX MD apart, molded it, and offers solid resin casts suitable for cosplay. These are not optics, and you can’t look through them, but they’re great for adding a touch of accuracy to your O’Neill uniform.
